Blood Binds is the story of Vanessa, an ordinary high school freshman whose world turns upside down the day that she finds out there are supernatural powers in the world. Not only that, but she discovers that she was born to be a part of that world as a Basilae, or Princess of Blood, with the power to bind other ability-holders to her. The design emphasizes the interconnectivity in the book, using red ribbon to illustrate the innate bond between Vanessa and the ability-holders close to her. The front cover focuses more on the relationships of the characters, with the typography underscoring this interconnectivity and accentuating the binds in the design. The back cover incorporates more of the theme of magic, featuring the character of Connway, who is more attuned to the world of magic. Therefore, Connway’s involvement is represented with the more overt majestic colors under his control. Since Blood Binds is a young adult fantasy novel, the design was largely influenced by bright colors and soft tone. The intention was to evoke the youth of the characters as well as the struggle.
